On first inspection you might have thought this garden looked okay and not in need of a lawn renovation. It certainly gave the impression it had been regularly mowed and kept at a reasonable length. The garden in general seemed tidy and well kept.

You will be shocked at the difference.
A Closer Inspection Reveals Lawn Damage
But look closer and you will see patchy, pale areas – some of the grass even being yellow. So, being lawn specialists that we are, we took a core sample and this is what we found:

Can you see the loose uneven layer at the top? That is called thatch and it was strangling the lawn to death.
What is Thatch in a Lawn?
In short, thatch is an accumulation of old lawn cuttings and everything it attracts as it breaks down. It builds up on top of the lawn and over years may make the lawn seem quite bouncy, but it doesn’t do it any good whatsoever.
This is easy to stop though by regular scarifying. And that is where we started with this complete lawn makeover.
Lawn Renovation Begins With Scarification
We scarified this lawn right down to the soil levels. The result was 6 tonnes of garden waste – all of which was thatch – the result of years and years of grass cutting without any other lawn treatment.

You can see the thatch piling up in this picture. The light areas are the lawn after it was given a healthy cut. The dark areas are the actual top of the lawn at the height it should be.

If you look closely you will see that all the dark area is indeed lawn. Once at the working base of the lawn it was time to do ‘our thing’ and start to rebuild.
Food for Lawn Growth
Every gardener knows, in addition to warmth, water and air, all plants need the right soil. It must have the right amount of drainage, not too much so the plant dries out and not too little so the roots get water-logged and cannot grow. And that soil must have the right nutrients. Our answer to that is to cover all the soil where the grass had really been struggling with a special loam. It is has a special formula to make grass happy.

Over Seeding (Re-Seeding) Brings Quick Results
A lawn that has been covered in thatch for this long needs a helping hand. In fact hands full of new grass seed. That is exactly what we provide in purpose built lawn seeding dispensers.

After The Makeover
This is how the lawn looked just a few weeks afterwards. What a difference it makes. Much easier to walk on and a lot easier on the eye too.
